PGT Impact Garage Doors: The Palm Beach Owner’s Guide

If your PGT impact garage door has a broken panel, failed spring, or a roller that’s chewed itself apart, we stock replacement parts for PGT’s most common wind-rated door lines and install them across Palm Beach, West Palm Beach, and the surrounding barrier islands. Typical installed repair costs run $180 to $950 depending on the part, and most PGT door repairs are buttoned up same-day once we confirm the exact panel profile or hardware spec. You’ll usually discover the failure in one of two ways: the door suddenly binds or grinds on the way up, or you spot daylight creeping through a cracked panel after a wind event.

Winslow Windows & Doors is an independent installer and repair shop. We’re not affiliated with PGT, but we’ve worked on their impact doors long enough to know exactly which parts interchange and which don’t.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT’s impact garage door lineup spans several series, and the part you need depends on the door’s era and wind-rating. The 5740 and 7780 series are the most common aluminum-frame PGT impact doors in Palm Beach county, but we also regularly service the 2200, 5500, and WinGuard-branded garage doors from the early 2010s. The compatibility gotcha most homeowners run into: PGT changed its roller hardware spec between the 2015 and 2016 model years on the 7780. A pre-2016 roller will not seat correctly in a post-2016 track, even though the door looks identical from the outside.

The fastest way to identify your door: check the inside face of the bottom panel, near the left hinge line. PGT etches a serial plate there with the series code. If the plate is gone (salt air eats the adhesive in Palm Beach faster than anywhere inland), measure the panel thickness: WinGuard-series doors run 14 to 16 gauge aluminum, and the 7780 uses a 15-gauge profile. Half an inch off means a different series, and a different set of parts.

For hardware like rollers, hinges, and struts, we’ll recommend OEM when the door is still under PGT’s transferable warranty. For older doors where OEM parts have a 4-to-6-week lead time, we stock quality aftermarket equivalents made to the same gauge and profile. We carry both on our trucks for the most common PGT series.

Signs Your PGT Impact Garage Door Is Failing

  • Grinding or squealing when the door moves. This is almost always a roller bearing going dry or a bearing that’s lost its shield. In Palm Beach’s salt air, unsealed rollers fail two to three years faster than inland. Ignoring it trashes the track, which turns a $40 roller into a $400 track replacement.
  • The door hangs crooked or binds halfway up. One side of the door is carrying more weight than the other. The cause is typically a worn hinge or a failing cable on one side, not the opener. Forcing the door open makes the bind worse and can blow out the panel’s bottom corner.
  • Visible cracks or spider-webbing in a panel. Impact-rated panels are designed to take one massive hit and stay in place. Once the panel face is compromised, its wind rating is shot. A cracked PGT panel won’t shatter inward today, but it will not protect your home in the next serious blow.
  • The door slams down when you release the opener. This means your torsion spring has lost tension or snapped. This is the one failure on this list that is genuinely dangerous to handle yourself, and we’ll cover that below.
  • Daylight visible through the door’s seams or bottom edge. On an impact door, gaps don’t only cost you air conditioning. A gap at the bottom seal lets wind-driven rain and salt spray under the door, which accelerates corrosion on the track and hardware.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Palm Beach, plan on $180 to $340 for a roller or hinge replacement on a PGT impact door, including the parts and the service call. A full torsion spring replacement runs $280 to $520 depending on whether your door uses a single or double spring setup, and a single panel replacement starts around $500 and climbs to $950 for large panels on the 7780 series. The range is driven by three things: which series you have, whether the hardware was corroded by salt air (seized bolts add labor time), and whether the panel matches an active or discontinued PGT profile.

Every install we quote includes the part, all labor, hardware, and a written line-item number before we start. No change orders downstream. Winslow’s Done Right Promise applies to every PGT repair we make: if it’s not done right, we come back and make it right. We also honor a 10% discount for seniors and veterans on every job, permanently.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do three things before calling: check the serial plate on the bottom panel, measure the panel thickness with a tape measure, and visually confirm which side the door is binding on. That information saves us a trip and helps us bring the right part on the first visit.

What you should not do: touch the torsion spring, remove a cable, or try to pull a panel off the track. A torsion spring on a PGT impact door holds enough tension to break fingers or worse if it releases. High-tension springs and the cables attached to them are a call-a-professional repair. Period. If your spring has snapped or the door has come off its track, call us at (561) 782-7525 and we’ll get a technician to your Palm Beach home.

What Neighbors Say About Winslow Windows & Doors

★★★★★

"Three big companies quoted us and every one sent a salesman with a leased truck. Ed turned up in a truck with his own name on the door, quoted less, and his crew were the same faces on day one and day nine."

YYolanda Betancourt
★★★★★

"A tile roof repair and new windows from the same company meant one crew, one permit runner, and nobody blaming the other trade. Ed checked the roof work himself before the tarp came off."

HHenrietta Pemberton
★★★★★

"Ed measured every opening himself and walked me through the product approval paperwork before I signed anything. When the inspector came he found the notice of acceptance taped inside a window like it should be and passed us first visit."

RRosalind Beaumont
★★★★★

"Someone tried the back slider while we were away. The glass crazed and held, the alarm never had to earn its keep, and the police report reads better than it might have. Ed came out the next morning to check the frame himself."

CCornelius Adeyemi
★★★★

"Excellent work and a fair price for what it is, though impact glass is never cheap and one bedroom window arrived with a scratched pane. Ed flagged it before I saw it and the replacement went in without me chasing anyone."

BBartholomew Crenshaw
★★★★★

"He replaced the front door and the garage door in the same week, both rated for impact, and lined the frames up so straight my level had nothing to say. My wife stopped hearing the highway from the front room."

MMaximilian Vasquez
★★★★

"The installation was clean and the windows are beautiful. The factory took about six weeks to deliver the units, which Ed told me upfront, but living behind plywood-framed openings in the meantime still tested my patience."
